I am writing to draw your urgent attention to the case of Mohammadhossein Hosseini, who is currently at risk of execution in Iran.
This case is unfolding amid a sharp escalation in executions during ongoing unrest and conflict, often carried out under conditions of internet restrictions and communication blackouts. These measures significantly reduce transparency and limit international oversight at the most critical moments.
Mohammad Hossein Hosseini, a 26-year-old footballer from Mashhad and former player for Persepolis and Sepahan, was arrested at his home in Mashhad on 23 Dey 1404. He was transferred to Vakilabad Prison, where he faces charges of war, leading protests, and collusion. He has been tortured and is at risk of being sentenced to death. His family is unaware of his condition.
In January 2026, the European Parliament took a strong position against repression in Iran, signaling that such violations will not go unanswered. At a time when visibility is being deliberately reduced, continued and visible engagement is essential.
I respectfully urge you to consider:
– Publicly sponsoring Mohammadhossein Hosseini within a political or detainee advocacy initiative
– Raising this case in plenary, committee discussions, or with the EEAS
– Supporting efforts to maintain visibility, including hearings with human rights defenders or affected families
– Calling for an immediate halt to the execution and for full due process guarantees
