BodyDear Honourable Francisco Assis,
I am writing with urgent concern regarding Abolfazl Karimi, who is currently at imminent risk of execution in Iran.
This case comes at a particularly alarming time. In recent months, Iranian authorities have intensified executions in parallel with widespread unrest and ongoing conflict. These actions are increasingly carried out under conditions of severe internet restrictions and communication blackouts, which limit transparency and prevent independent scrutiny.
Abolfazl Karimi, 35, a motorcycle courier and cook living in Tehran and father of one child, was arrested on January 6th, 2026 while helping two injured women during the Tehran protests. He was injured with a shotgun and tortured and forced to sign a confession. He was sentenced to death in the online court of Branch 15 of the Revolutionary Court, presided over by Salavati. He has been transferred from Greater Tehran Prison to Qezl-e-Hesar and is in urgent need of treatment.
Credible reports indicate that detainees are often subjected to unfair trials, restricted legal access, and coerced confessions. When executions take place during periods of reduced visibility, the risk of irreversible injustice is significantly heightened.
In this context, international attention becomes one of the few remaining safeguards.
I respectfully urge you to:
* Call for an immediate halt to the execution of Abolfazl Karimi
* Raise this case urgently with the European External Action Service and relevant EU institutions
* Advocate for transparency and independent monitoring, particularly during ongoing communication restrictions

Time is critical. When visibility is deliberately reduced, silence can enable irreversible harm.
Thank you for your attention.
Sincerely,
A concerned citizen
