I am writing to draw your urgent attention to the case of Zanyar Abbasi, who is currently at risk of execution in Iran.
This case is unfolding amid a sharp escalation in executions during ongoing unrest and conflict, often carried out under conditions of internet restrictions and communication blackouts. These measures significantly reduce transparency and limit international oversight at the most critical moments.
Zanyar Abbasi, a Kurdish citizen from Divandarreh, was arrested by Intelligence Agency forces in a raid on a private home on the morning of 5 Esfand 1404 and taken to an unknown location. No specific information is available regarding the charges, whereabouts, or condition of his detention.
In January 2026, the European Parliament took a strong position against repression in Iran, signaling that such violations will not go unanswered. At a time when visibility is being deliberately reduced, continued and visible engagement is essential.
I respectfully urge you to consider:
– Publicly sponsoring Zanyar Abbasi within a political or detainee advocacy initiative
– Raising this case in plenary, committee discussions, or with the EEAS
– Supporting efforts to maintain visibility, including hearings with human rights defenders or affected families
– Calling for an immediate halt to the execution and for full due process guarantees
