I am writing with urgent concern regarding Masoud Babaei, who is currently at imminent risk of execution in Iran.
This case comes at a particularly alarming time. In recent months, Iranian authorities have intensified executions in parallel with widespread unrest and ongoing conflict. These actions are increasingly carried out under conditions of severe internet restrictions and communication blackouts, which limit transparency and prevent independent scrutiny.
Masoud Babaei, 27, from Shirvan, North Khorasan, was arrested on 18 Dey 1404 during the protests. His forced confession was broadcast on the Iranian Radio and Television and he was introduced as the ringleader. His fate is unknown, but he remains imprisoned and at risk of execution.
Credible reports indicate that detainees are often subjected to unfair trials, restricted legal access, and coerced confessions. When executions take place during periods of reduced visibility, the risk of irreversible injustice is significantly heightened.
In this context, international attention becomes one of the few remaining safeguards.
I respectfully urge you to:
* Call for an immediate halt to the execution of Masoud Babaei
* Raise this case urgently with the European External Action Service and relevant EU institutions
* Advocate for transparency and independent monitoring, particularly during ongoing communication restrictions
