In its January 2026 resolution on repression in Iran, the European Parliament strongly condemned the continued use of the death penalty and reaffirmed its position on listing the IRGC as a terrorist organisation, as well as restricting Iranian diplomats’ access to Parliament premises. These steps reflect Parliament’s commitment to accountability and consistent human rights scrutiny.
In this context, political sponsorship of detainees sentenced to death remains a particularly effective and structured instrument. Sponsorship, combined with raising the case in plenary or committee, submitting written questions to the EEAS, and facilitating speaking opportunities for human rights defenders or family members, can ensure sustained follow-up rather than isolated statements.
Your engagement could make a meaningful contribution to keeping this case under active parliamentary consideration.
Sincerely,
A concerned citizen
